89…The Cocktails: Cole’s

I happened upon this quaint little place by accident.  My daughter and I love the 5 Cent Diner that is just around the corner.   The 5 Cent Diner has odd hours, they are closed on Mondays and the rest of the week, they are closed between 3:30 and 6:00 pm.  So we would make the trek downtown to have some corn cakes at the diner, only to be disappointed and find them closed.  Still hungry, we happened upon Cole’s.  Cole’s little bar has a few booth-like tables, and serving the best French dip sandwiches with spicy pickles that I find impossible to eat.   Their French dip sandwiches rival the sandwiches at Philippe’s…I leave it to you to decide which is the best.

One afternoon, I ordered a cocktail with my slider-style sandwiches –a Vesper Martini to be exact..and although I’ve had a Vesper before, the bartender at Cole’s makes an grapefruit variation that is to die for.  After that…Cole’s is my go-to place when someone asks where I want to go for a quick cocktail after work.

If you are not familiar with a Vesper Martini…it is the famous drink ordered by James Bond in both the book and the movie Casino Royale.

The recipe for Bond’s “Vesper” martini, as described in the 1953 book: ‘Three measures of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel. Got it?’

In the movie Casino Royale, when Vesper asks Bond if he named the drink after her “because of the bitter aftertaste”, 007 replies that he named it for her, “because once you have tasted it, you won’t drink anything else.”  And I have to say—that its true!
